The United Society of Artists

The UA is an independent, non-profit making society. Founded in 1921, it was originally called the New Society of Artists. It was established as an art organisation aimed at giving artists living outside London the opportunity to exhibit in central London. In the 1930s the society changed its name to the United Society of Artists. From 1956, the UA held its annual exhibitions at the FBA Galleries in Great Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London and from 1972 at the Mall Galleries in Carlton Terrace SW1. In 1988, the UA became independent from the FBA.

Past Members include David Shepherd, Edna Biznan and Gordon Gunn.

Today, the UA showcases the work of artists from all over the UK, including London. The society represents some of the best contemporary artists working in different forms of art such as painting, sculpture, fabric-work, ceramics, printing and drawing.

Any exhibition of work by UA members is always an exciting and eclectic mix of artistic mediums. Styles range from representational to abstraction and conceptual. UA members cover a diverse range of approaches including figurative, impressionist and expressionist. This diversity and openness to ideas is what helps to make the UA distinctive in character and so welcoming to new artists.

The UA holds an Annual Members' Exhibition in London which is open to Members only and an Open Exhibition which is open to Members and non-Members. The exhibition shows the best work submitted, regardless of style, subject or media.

As well as the annual exhibitions, there are exhibitions for UA Members held throughout the year in a variety of locations in and outside London. All work submitted is subject to selection.
